Our School - Principal's Message

Thank you for taking the time to view our website. We hope that you enjoy having a glimpse of our school, learning programs, photos, programs and activities.

Birregurra Primary School is a small school with an enrolment of 85 children in 4 grades. About half of our students live in the town and the rest are bussed in each day from surrounding areas. At Birregurra Primary School, we aim to be an outstanding rural school where care, curiosity, innovation and progressive practices ensure students thrive in an ever-changing world.

As a smaller school, our teachers know each of the students and have the opportunity to develop excellent teacher/student relationships. We also know our families really well and value the opportunity to share their child’s learning journey with them.

Teachers understand the power of the student-teacher relationship and demonstrate high respect for students as learners and as people. They work to create an optimal, collaborative learning environment where students can feel valued as a member of the learning community, be productively engaged and experience success as learners. We have high expectations of the learning for all students and believe that every student has the ability to learn recognising students learn in different ways, and at different stages. Teachers demonstrate a willingness to be receptive to each learner’s needs; each child’s strengths, interests and stage of development are identified and catered for and a wide variety of experiences and learning opportunities are provided. Each student has individual learning goals that are monitored and regularly reviewed. Teachers and students work together to set and communicate appropriate, specific and challenging goals relevant to each student’s learning needs.

Students access weekly specialist Art and Library classes through the Mobile Resource Centres. They also have weekly Language (Italian) classes. A Specialist Physical Education program is offered in Term 1. Specialist Music lessons are offered weekly in Terms 3 & 4 and students can access private piano, cello, drum and singing lessons in school time throughout the year. We have a strong sport and physical education program and participate strongly in the annual Polwarth Sports. We provide pathways for students to represent their school, district, zone and state in a range of sports.

The school is a safe and caring environment for students with a school-wide focus on developing positive relationships with students, families and community members. There is a very strong focus on building the leadership capacity of our students through the provision of authentic leadership opportunities, encouraging all students to take responsibility whenever possible. The school has a very active Junior School Council responsible for a range of educational and fundraising activities across the school.

The school provides a central focus for the community of Birregurra and has built strong partnerships with parents and local community groups. These partnerships maximise learning opportunities for all in our learning community and these partnerships reflect our school motto –‘Living and Learning Together’.

School Council and Parents and Friends work enthusiastically to support the school in a number of areas, including fundraising to provide a range of additional resources.

We are fortunate to have a fantastic location, school grounds and resources, dedicated and caring staff, wonderful children and a really supportive school parent community. These factors all combine to make Birregurra Primary School a stimulating, flexible and happy environment where all children have the opportunity to develop the key social, academic and emotional competencies to be successful and happy life-long learners.
