 Year 1 - Miss Erskine

The past few weeks in Grade One have been very busy with lots of new learning, a visit from the Geelong Cats’ footballers and the Polwarth and House Sports days. We have continued to explore ourselves as learners and are enjoying setting and reflecting on our learning goals.

During literacy sessions, we have been exploring a range of genres and the features of these texts. We are using both digital and paper books to explore these texts. Through our Sound Waves program and Daily 5 activities we are continuing to develop our reading strategies. The Grade Ones have also been have been busy developing their decoding and comprehension strategies as they set and monitor individual goals. It is fabulous to see them so incredibly engaged and motivated to increase their reading skills.

It has been terrific to see the Grade Ones continue to record their own pieces of writing, challenging themselves to set personal writing goals and develop their editing and proofreading skills. Our weekly ‘Big Writes’ have provided a great opportunity for the students to showcase their wonderful story telling and they are relishing the opportunity to display this writing on our ‘Wow Work’ wall in the classroom.

In our Math sessions, we have been busy exploring place value and early measurement through a variety of games and interactive activities. The students are enjoying working in pairs and small groups as we explore these concepts.

We have begun our Science Unit ‘Watch it Grow’ and the students are enjoying observing the changes of the Mealworms in our classroom. Our Science unit will continue into next term as we investigate the way living things grow, change and have offspring similar to themselves.

Throughout our ‘Respectful Relationships’ program, we have explored emotional literacy and personal strengths. We are working on interpreting different emotions and identifying and describing personal strengths. A busy, but productive start to the year in Grade One. We are looking forward to continuing all of our learning successes next term
